RailState New Features Release Oct. 2, 2024

Release notes Oct. 2, 2024

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Real-time Alerts on the RailState User Interface!

Building on our existing Watchlists, you can now set real-time notifications for any combination of filters, ensuring you never miss critical updates.

With this new feature, you’ll receive instant notifications for detection events that match your interest parameters - keeping you one step ahead.

Key Benefits:

  • Immediate Insights: Get instant updates on key events delivered right to you (e.g., "Your train was detected approaching the port").
  • Proactive Decision-Making: Act swiftly to avoid bottlenecks and improve efficiency (e.g., "Your railcars were detected leaving the local serving yard").
  • Customizable Alerts: Tailor alerts to your needs, including frequency and custom distribution lists.
  • Efficiency Boost: Say goodbye to refreshing dashboards—get alerts when they matter most.

Real-time Alerts:

Upon saving a new Watchlist, or modifying an existing Watchlist, you will notice a new 'Real-time alerts' tab, as pictured below:

Once clicked, you'll see options to set and save a new real-time alert. Defaults are pre-set but can be adjusted to fit your specific needs.

Here’s a streamlined overview of the options and steps:

  1. Watchlist Name – Appears in the email subject to help identify alerts in recipients' inboxes.
  2. Watchlist Description – Appears in the email body to provide context for the alert.
  3. Active Notifications – Set to 'yes' to activate the alert (return later and select 'no' to make it inactive).
  4. Daily Limit – Set the maximum number of alerts you want to receive each day (for the specific query) to avoid excess notifications.
  5. Staleness Threshold – Specify the time window (in hours) to suppress outdated data, ensuring only the most current results are shown.
  6. File Type – Choose the format in which you want to receive the data.
  7. Recipients' Emails – Add the email addresses of everyone who should receive the alert.
  8. Save Watchlist – Click to activate the alert.

Once saved, whenever a detection matches your watchlist criteria recipients will receive email alerts automatically (up to the specified daily limit set).

Steps summarized below:

Note: For further detail, when on the UI, hover over the '?' to the right of each step label to view helpful tooltips.

Reminder: To STOP a real-time alert, navigate to the Watchlists menu, select Settings on the watchlist you wish to stop, hit the Real-time alerts tab, and select 'no' under Active Notifications.

Tips: The Watchlist report is set for the menu and tab you are on while saving the watchlist.

For the real-time watchlists the date/time is not considered (except for the staleness threshold), meaning alerts are sent as soon as detections matching your filter criteria are processed by RailState.

This is the first iteration of Real-time Alerts. We have two further iterations planned, which are Real-time Alerts by Threshold and Real-time Alerts by Condition. As we continue to progress we will highlight as released.
